Preparing the Balloon

In the morning before the flight, the pilot will check various weather sights and make a phone call to the met office.

Once on sight the basket and envelope is off loaded. The basket and burner is rigged and tested, before being tipped on its side and connected to the envelope.

The envelope is carefully laid out, spread out and filled with cold air. Once the balloon is filled with this air and more checks are done on the inside of the balloon, the pilot will start the hot inflation. The balloon will slowly come to life and start to stand up. Once the balloon is fully inflated the passengers will be asked to get into the basket.

Hot air ballooning will open a kaleidoscope of scenes and colours. You will be met by the gentle warmth of the sun as it starts rising over the Hot en Tot Holland Mountains. The dramatic peaks and valleys will take your breath away as you float over and past them. To the south east lays Stellenboch with its world renowned wine farms that have stayed perfectly maintained.

Further south, the sea meets Gordens Bay and Strand. Guests are able to see Table Mountain with Cape Town just starting to wake up at its feet. To the west, Blouberg Beach and the famous Robin Island can be admired. Directly below are a variety of wine farms, agricultural land and roads that run in all directions. Hear the excited spectators hoot their horns in approval as they pass right underneath you on the way to work.

If you are a go-getters or just crazy about flying, we do pilot training. The 16 hour hands- on training will be done one-on-one, by one of three CAA approved instructors. Our School of ballooning is the only accredited school in the country. We boast over 30 years combined flying experience. Between the three pilots working at Life Ballooning (one UK Commercial pilot and one Springbok balloon pilot) we hold licenses in four countries.
